Creating content for abundance

Jessica and I have been creating content for abundance since the beginning. For The Popular Podcast, it has always been quantity over quality. We will gladly post a shitty episode as opposed to no episode at all. And it is this mentality which is being affirmed in this month’s Wired article Tech Is Too Cheap to Meter: It’s Time to Manage for Abundance, Not Scarcity by Chris Anderson.
One point that Anderson makes in the piece is that most people agree that YouTube is full of meaningless videos. What people can’t agree on is which videos are meaningless. He goes on to elaborate that just as nature wastes(a dandelion tossing thousands of seeds in the hopes that a lucky few will survive), we must learn to waste computing power. That is, in effect, what Jessica and I attempt to do with our content creation process: just keep trying things until something works.
The discussion of the quality of our preroll content, then, comes at a perfect time, because the argument against it being fluff is that we are just wasting. We are throwing goo against the wall and seeing what sticks. And other cliches. While lots of people find the rambling annoying to sit through, there are probably a lot of other people who find it interesting.
However. The other very important point that Anderson makes is that while storage space is no longer scarce, people’s time still very much is. We have to find that sweet spot- where we are still experimenting but that we are not wasting people’s time.

Recent feedback indicating that the preroll content is often of questionable quality provoked a bit of brainstorming on the subject, and in this preroll, we are discussing possible methods to improve the quality of the both the premium and public content.

As discussed in the preroll above, we are attempting to make both our premium and public content better by having more focused conversations in the preroll videos. This way, the premium content is more valuable- a more developed conversation about the episode topic, and the public content is better because the points we need to make are clearly defined beforehand. While I’m not sure today’s were the best examples of great content in either realm, we are making steps in the right direction.
