The Popular Podcast #151: Lifefucking Revisions

2009 August 26

Self-evaluation and taking criticism are necessary skills for the progress of any lifestyle designer. In this episode, we iterate once again the importance of lifestreaming as a lifestyle design methodology.

rule

KELLY’S DIARY

Things I said I would never do

Critical thinking is one of the first skills any designer must master. This means one must not only be able to think critically about her own work, but also accept constructive criticism as such. Any complete design solution is the product of a laborious process of revisions.

Obtaining a perfect life is a design problem, and the solution is only a series of revisions away.

Design students often develop the disgusting habit of defending turds. Instead of admitting she took no thought in choosing a typeface, one may insist on defending the non-choice. This is a result of ignorance and fear. She is inexeperienced and afraid of so appearing.

The same ignorance and fear can prevent our lifestyle designs from progressing. The designs of the students who can’t take criticism don’t grow. Those students don’t make progress, because their designs are ‘good enough’.

We can fall into the same traps in our lifestyle designs, especially if we have worked hard to arrive at our first solution. I worked hard to build up a tolerance to be able to drink every night. It was a great lifestyle, and I often miss it. However, the pros no longer outweigh the cons.

My previous-self would have been embarrassed by my current-self. I would be ashamed to admit that I *gasp* exercise on a regular basis, because it was something I always said I would never do. I was too cool, too lazy, and probably too hungover. My current-self isn’t afraid to admit that I am a bit embarrassed of my previous-self.

Self-Evaluate.

Designers solve problems. To reach a lifestyle design solution, one must first define the problem(s) she is trying to solve. Goals must be clear and concise. When designing, constantly ask yourself: will this decision get me closer to my goal?

Self-Evaluation preceeds consultation. Making every decision a conscious one prepares the designer to engage in discussion about the design. Before requesting the time and input of peers, thorough knowledge of the problem and a proposed solution are vital.

Contrast potential answers to these two questions:

1. What do you think of this design?
2. Is ‘element of design’ effective at achieving ‘goal’?

Open-ended and ambiguous, the former lacks self-evaluation. The designer has not taken first the time to consider which elements of the design are not successful. Without direction, critique can focus on the superficial, especially if peers feel they must spare the feelings of the designer.

Accept Criticism.

Design without critique is life as a recluse. It can be lived, but not completely enriched. Each with his/her own unique perspective, your peers will always notice something about your design that you didn’t. Or infer a message you never intended. Most importantly, your peers will always suggest something you never considered. You must, however, ask them the right questions.

The easiest and most obvious way to seek constructive criticism as a lifestyle designer is through lifestreaming. Employing lifestreaming as a lifestyle design methodology, Jessica and I actively and regularly seek feedback from the crowd. We submit our lifestyle designs for review: detailing known success, admitting known failures, and seeking improvement in known areas of weakness.

With knowledge gained through the design process, we now have the power to push our lifestyle designs to limits we never before imagined possible. Only through the completion of the first iteration will we be able to reach a second, more informed, more successful iteration. If we never started eating whole wheat English muffins, we would have never gotten to the point of making them from scratch. Revisions. We must recognize our successes while maintaining the humility to seek help where we need it. Enhance your strengths and admit your weaknesses.

Timeless design is an exercise in control and restraint.

The design is finished when nothing else can be taken away. The same should be true for your lifestyle designs. Make incremental progress to arrive at the simplest possible solution.

One year after setting out to do so, Jessica and I arrived at a sustainable pattern for fitness and nutrition that included whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and regular exercise. What we realized through the process of creating that first iteration, is that there is so much more to maintaining a healthy lifestyle than we originally predicted. After profuse sharing, conversing, and contemplating our pattern for good health, we have learned a lot from our peers and discovered many places we can improve.

Amazed daily at the progress my life has made, I am certain to attribute my success to the design mentality with which I approach living.

With clearly defined goals, constructive criticism, and constant reevaluation, I am able to say with confidence that every day is the best of my life.

TPP back to school fitness challenge

TPP FITNESS CHALLENGE

Day 1

We have some very exciting visitors coming to Austin on September 17! Just in time for the school year (classes at UT start Wednesday), TPP is taking on a new challenge. We’ll be doing daily workouts and bike rides, and attempting to find satisfying, low-cal meals. We’ll be cutting out the PIZZA, WINE, and ICE CREAM, our major weaknesses. Also part of this challenge will be working on our time-management skills. It’s hard to stay healthy without enough sleep, so a large focus will be placed on having a balanced schedule.

This post wouldn’t be complete without some accountability driven stats! Jessica’s morning weigh-in was 132.8, so let’s see what we can make happen in the next 23 days…

Wish us luck!

Fresh off of Jessica’s back-to-school informal gathering boat at Red House, we are having a drink to celebrate The Popular Podcast (and new staff crushes)! We will be starting our first garden soon, thanks to some consulting from the incomparable Laura Mckissack. I wonder if Jessica will let me grow herb(s). Also, we made our second time around boutique to Jorge’s last night after the owner reached out to Jessica on Yelp. The experience was…

TPPeep This #1: new obsessions

TPPeep This

Eat these internet treats

Although I haven’t quite figured out who Hipsterrunoff is exactly (high school student? BFA in graphic design? clever marketing team?), his posts are fascinating. He has launched a branding/merch campaign called “I am Carles“, which is exquisitely boutique.

I AM CARLES — THESE ITEMS ARE FOR SALE.

Next: a new staple in TPP vocabulary: PEEP TOE FAIL. Use whenever something goes wrong, particularly when stubbing one’s toe or stepping on someone else’s foot.

fail owned pwned pictures

see more at Fail Blog

Other bite-sized noms this week: The Big Bad Swim (trailer): one of the few movies we’ve watched all the way through lately on Netflix streaming. Highly recommended for aquafans! Also, Meryl Streep on Stephen Colbert was nearly EROTIC. After we watched, we went to see Julie and Julia which was almost heartbreaking in its feel-goodness. I have also begun using Google Calendar as my primary calendar now (instead of the expensive basecamp) and my life is now incredibly organized. Lastly, for those of you interested in healthy eating, we have recently swapped out our delicious Kashi for breakfast and replaced it with fruit (frozen or fresh). It makes a significant difference in our calorie counts when not snacking on fruit all day and instead having it at breakfast. We get the added benefit of skipping milk.

New breakfast

That’s all for the first issue of TPPeep This, what did you think? What online (or off) treasures are making you have the best day ever?

The Popular Podcast #149: Lifefucking Sushi!

We have wanted to try making sushi from scratch for some time, and we finally got the balls to go through with it. Acquiring all the supplies for our first time was an annoying, yet exciting adventure, and now we will probably make sushi everyday! Do you think it would be good with salsa?

rule

‘The rice is the most important part.’

Making sushi is much easier than it appears. Everyone will tell you, “Oh you have to make sure you get the rice just right.” It is really not that hard. You put the rice in the cooker, cook it, then mix in a vinegar mixture. More on that later. The true challenge to preparing sushi is gathering all the supplies for your first time.

We chopped our veggies and mixed our vinegar before cooking the rice, just to have everything prepared. Let the rice stand for 5-10mins in the cooker, then transfer to a non-reactive bowl and fold in your mixture. Be careful not to destroy the integrity of the rice grains. A paddle came with the rice cooker, otherwise you could use a wooden spoon or large chopsticks. Alternately fold and fan the rice to help it cool to room temperature.

Seasoning recipe: 5T rice vinegar, 1t sugar, 1/2t salt. We substituted 1T vinegar for lime juice. This is for four cups of cooked rice.

Today we discuss reasons and methods for backing up your lifestream. Jessica has been testing out lifestreambackup.com and reports back on her experience so far. The conclusion: self-hosting your backup is best, and lifestreambackup.com offers an option to do that with your Amazon S3 account.

JESSICA’S DIARY

Review of lifestreambackup.com

I had a chance to test out lifestreambackup.com‘s yearly backup plan, which runs for $29.95 a year. I successfully backed up my Twitter account, and just logged in to find my Flickr account completely backed up as well. I got sidetracked for several minutes looking at gems such as this (from my senior graphic design show in undergrad):

this is a redundant image from years ago now brought back to life

I have some reservations with using a service that I don’t host myself, which makes running lifestreambackup.com on my own S3 server (if I had one) sound very appealing. This service is still in it’s infancy, and I expect them to add many more features. After viewing my Twitter and Flickr backup, I have a few immediate concerns: instead of XML files, why aren’t tweets backed up individually like the photos? Next, will I ever be able to search my backup? I’m uncertain if they backup things like photo tags and other properties. My ideal lifestream backup solution would be similar in brute force to lifestreambackup.com, but I really want a friendly and searchable interface for browsing my backed up stream. If they provided a customizable, skin-able, solution, they could be a contender not just in backup, but also in presentation.

My concerns are growing the more I poke around my backups. My Twitter feed seems to only go back to October 2008, but I signed up sometime in April 2008. And what will I do with these files once I have them backed up? Does Twitter offer an option to import an XML file of tweets? The searchability and presentation of the backup data is beginning to prove extremely important.

In this set on Flickr, I have several screenshots of the site interface with commentary on functionality by founder Rob May. Check it out for a more thorough look at the service’s innards. What are your thoughts? Would you want to use a service like this? What in your lifestream do you find integral to back up? What would your lifestream back up dream come true look like?

Log in to download my lifestreambackup.com Twitter XML file and see for yourself. Do you find a file of this type useful? (1.4mb)
